This morning Googler in Australia (and preumably other timezones with a date of 21st September) have been presented with a(nother) new Google Doodle – this time most definitely in honour of the birth of H.G Wells (see google.com.au to check it out)
So the big question is : Have the last two Google logos been a lead up to this?
Apparently so, and I’ll tell you why I think that’s stupid.
Firstly, the logo released Sept 05, depicting one of the Google o’s being abducted doesn’t really have anything to do with Wells. And the Twitter code released for that particular image (which read ‘All your o’s are belong to us’) was a reference to the mistranslated Zerowing – as far as I’m aware, there’s no connection to Wells there.
The logo released on the 15th, showing the Google made with crop circles simarly isn’t directly Wells related – although the Twitter code in that instance did indeed point to the place where his Martians landed in War of the Worlds.
But there are two more significant reasons why I don’t think it makes sense todays ‘doodle’ is directly related to the previous two;
1 – Typically, Google do not ‘lead up’ to events – they display an altered logo for the event itself. It just doesn’t make sense.
2 – Although the previous two logos have had filenames with one of the letters missing/abducted, this one is simply called HGWells09.gif.
So there. Google, you entranced me, but now I’m just miffed.
